Here are some of the hackathon projects and UC Berkeley clubs in which I applied my leadership skills and technical knowledge beyond the classroom.

Microsoft Hackathon| DSSB | CalHacks | ML@Bx

Project HOPE | IEEE | GamesCrafters

COMPUTER SCIENCE MENTOR & TUTOR

One of the primary ways I applied my leadership skills on campus, was by mentoring students and teaching computer science as a part of the CS Mentors organization (CSM). I got the opportunity to hold discussion sections every week, which involved my brief lecture that reviewed the previous week’s course concepts for the students and “programming + worksheet-solving” exercises that helped my students strengthen their understanding of the concepts through practical application. I was also a part of the CS61B course teaching staff (Data Structures & Algorithms) as a lab tutor/ assistant. I am grateful for these opportunities to assist my fellow students by helping them debug their programming projects and reviewing course materials during my discussion sections, office hours and lab hours. I continued my teaching/ mentorship efforts by contributing to the Academic Development Committee at Data Science Society @ Berkeley (DSSB). I helped the club develop workshops to promote awareness about data science on campus and I was also the primary lecturer for 2 SQL workshops aimed at Berkeley Haas students and those who had no prior technical knowledge.

LEADERSHIP AWARD SCHOLARSHIP

CAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

The Leadership Award is a one-year, merit-based scholarship of $2000 that recognizes undergraduate students at UC Berkeley who demonstrate innovative, initiative-driven leadership impacting their academic, work, or community environments. Students compete for the scholarship every year, ensuring a diverse and dynamic annual cohort of leaders whose work is relevant and newly inspiring. I received the award as an incoming freshman for the leadership involvement (particularly as the Director of Computer Club and as the initiator of the Rural Education Project) in high school. You can read more about my efforts here.

PROJECT GOLD

UC BERKELEY LEAD CENTER

During my Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters, I participated in Project GOLD (Growing Opportunities for Leadership Development) at UC Berkley’s LEAD center (Leadership, Engagement, Advising, & Development). The LEAD Center is essentially Berkeley’s hub for student involvement, leadership development, and co-curricular advising. Its goal is to assist students as they explore their interests, pursue their passions, and create community at Cal.  Project GOLD was a year-long engaging, profound exploration and development of leadership ideologies facilitated by a professional staff member and student leaders on campus. I got the opportunity to actively contribute to the leadership development workshops, debates and discussions while joining a community of student leaders on campus who are involved in bettering the educational experience of the campus community through the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) and programs like Cal Student Orientation.
