Explorer Intern | Remote Desktop Team

Microsoft Cloud & Enterprise

In Summer 2016, I worked as an Explorer Intern in the Microsoft Remote Desktop team within the Cloud & Enterprise division (now in the Windows & Devices group) for 12 weeks. With two other teammates, I developed the Remote Desktop Client for Xbox One as a Universal Windows Platform Application (UWP). I then worked as a Program Manager to develop a Feature Spec for Cortana Voice Integration and as a Software Engineer to implement the Xbox One controller interaction using C# and C++. This process helped me learn a lot about customer-centric product development, multi-threaded programming and utilizing C#, XAML, Xbox One Developer Tools and Visual Studio to implement a UWP app. I also learned a lot by overcoming challenges like perfecting the cursor acceleration and precision in a remote session based on the Xbox controller’s thumbstick, implementing the controller input not just for the Xbox but also for PC and brainstorming the best ways for customers to utilize Cortana & Kinect in a remote session.

During my time at Microsoft, not only did I get the opportunity to learn how to collaborate between teams across a large corporation but I also got to learn how to work on internal hackathon projects with significant business impact. To read about how I applied machine learning knowledge from my university courses to a hackathon project (hosted by Microsoft’s Enterprise Cloud & Mobility division) that has the potential to save over a million dollars for our hosting partners every year, click here.

The internship concluded on a fantastic note with Microsoft’s Intern Signature Event which featured Ellie Goulding’s performance at Seattle’s Space Needle and Microsoft Surface Books as gifts for every intern! I am very grateful for my internship experience in summer 2016 and hope to maintain the relationships I developed over some of the most memorable weeks of my life!
