CALIFORNIA WATER USAGE
In this project, I explored possible connections between water usage, geography, and income in California. The water data for this project was procured from the California State Water Resources Control Board and curated by the Pacific Institute. The map data includes US topography, California counties, and ZIP codes. The dataset on income comes from the IRS.
Through the analyses in this project, I discovered a few facts about incomes in California and a few relations between these incomes and the proportion of farmers in the ZIP Code and the water usage per person per day.
-
Among all California tax returns, the average total income is approximately $72,791. Generally the regions in/ near the Bay Area or the regions near Hollywood, Los Angeles are constituted with high-income (Above $100,000) earners.
-
I observed an inverse relation between the proportion of farmers in a given ZIP code and its average income.
-
Also, the region in California around Los Angeles appears to use more water per person per day. In the Bay Area, people in the top 10 highest-income water districts used an average of 24.6454 more gallons of water per person per day than people in the rest of the districts.
To better understand California water usage, income, and geography, we can attempt to investigate if there are any geographical/ climatic factors related to higher water usage in California. We can also investigate if the dominant occupation of Californian residents in a given water district, had a relation to its average water consumption and average income. Data that can summarize the geographical terrain, major occupation, average income and average water consumption, in the Californian ZIP codes/ water districts can help help us find such relations.
