Winter Extern | Cal Externship Program
Khan Academy
In January 2016, I was selected as a Winter Extern for Khan Academy by the Cal Externship Program. I got the opportunity to shadow a UC Berkeley Alumnus (Tom Yedwab) at the Khan Academy HQ in Mountain View, CA for a couple of days. At Khan Academy, my teammates and I got to participate in weekly all-hands and dev team update meetings while learning about the partnership between College Board and Khan Academy for SAT preparation. We also got the opportunity to have lunch with the company’s founder and CEO, Salman Khan and a few other software developers and content creators. It was very inspiring to hear about Salman Khan’s journey of developing Khan Academy and also his future goals for education.
We then got to learn about the company’s culture, software & content development lifecycle and the business flow that sustains the non-profit organization. We were also provided with a user-experience survey about the website’s content and design, which allowed us to test a few new features and provide constructive feedback and ideas. In some way, my conversations and experience at Khan Academy, inspired me to explore ways to improve the educational experiences of the communities near my workplace and the student population on my college campus.
